Google's Own Search Tips

Google Tools

Google Desktop
If I had to say what was the most useful tool on my PC I'd probably have to say it is Google's Desktop Search http://desktop.google.com/ . Over the years I've tried various search solutions (even written my own), none was actually useable or useful. Google Desktop even allows me to search my emails!, and even more extraordinarily recovers documents I've deleted from it's cache!?!

  • Google Desktop Search for just one filetype syntax "filetype:jpg dogs" will only return jpgs of dogs

Google Gmail as File Backup System
It's always useful to have a spare email address, but I like many use Gmail as a last resort backup system. I email as attachments program source code, irreplaceable documents to my Gmail account. Of course I also backup to CD/DVD.

Google Local
Another unbeatable service that actually works, set it up to your postcode and just type in plumber or whatever. I usually have to work on holiday so it will especially useful in an area I don't know at all to find PC support/bits etc.Of course with Google's unbeatable usability it shows the results on a map so you can choose the most convenient.

Google Earth
Google Earth is both fun useful and amazing. If I just type in my Postcode I can even see my Golf car in my drive. I use it to help plan my weekend trips, locate our holiday hotel etc.
